New Delhi: The police on Sunday said that it has arrested a notorious autolifter who had managed to evade arrest since 2012, even after he went under the knife and got a plastic surgery done to deceive the police. His stint came to an end when he finally landed in police’s net.

The autolifter, identified as Kunal alias Anuj, was arrested along with his two other associates by a team of Delhi police. Several cars stolen from Delhi-NCR were recovered. The other two arrested are Irshad Ali and Mohammed Shadab.

Based on a tip-off that Kunal would be visiting Kalkaji area on October 13, a trap was laid near Nehru Place Metro station and he was arrested along with his associates.

Kunal is a resident of Shalimar Garden. Interrogation revealed that he used to steal cars along with his accomplice, Irshad. They had stolen hundreds of cars from Delhi and NCR.

During interrogation, he revealed that the gang members would locate vehicles that were declared as “total loss vehicles” by insurance companies and buy these, along with their registration documents, through scrap dealers.

While the “total loss vehicles” are disposed of as scrap, the documents are retained. The gang members would then target vehicles of the same make and colour and steal them. After completing all formalities, they sold the said car in the open market.
