New Delhi: A Nigerian footballer, along with his Indian wife, was arrested by Delhi police for duping people in the name of custom clearance.

The Nigerian was identified as Ifeanyi Joachin Nwafor, while his wife hails from Kokrajhar, Assam. A sum of Rs 6,69,000 in cash cheated from different persons was recovered from them along with other articles.

A woman alleged that some months ago, one UK- based man became her Facebook friend and requested her to accept few gifts for poor people in India. A couple of days later, she received a call from Customs Office, Mumbai stating that the office had received a parcel from the UK and she had to pay custom duty of `26,000 for clearance of the parcel.

Thereafter, the caller told that they had scanned the parcel and it contains valuable items, so the complainant had to pay Rs 95,600 as income tax.

During the course of investigation, call records, bank details and other technical surveillance were done to nab the culprits. On Monday, accused were arrested from Dabri, New Delhi.

During interrogation, they disclosed that they used to approach people through social media. After taking them under confidence, Ifeanyi used to tell them about sending precious gifts for them.

After that his wife would call the victims representing as custom official and tell them to pay clearance fees as the parcel is coming from foreign country.
