New Delhi: A deputy commissioner of police has mocked the Supreme Court order of banning fire crackers during Diwali in a tweet on microblogging site Twitter. The tweet stated that “he didn’t foresee that such a day would come when fire crackers would be banned in India.” The tweet left the police department in a spot.

Though the tweet was later deleted, its screenshots went viral on social media, which made the cops to issue a clarification and distanced themselves from the tweet.

IPS Devender Arya, posted as DCP (southwest), tweeted from his personal handle saying “Diwali pe bamb/pataka bajane se jail ho sakthi hain, Kabhi socha nahi k yeh din aayega. Kya me apna Bharat desh me hi hoon. Jai Sri Ram. Jai Hind,” he said.

However, Arya deleted the tweet after it was pointed out to him.

Soon after, the Delhi police issued a statement, it said that the said tweet got posted from the personal handle of Devender Arya. “It was immediately deleted by the officer. Delhi police has nothing to do with that tweet. We are committed to ensure that directions of Hon’ble Supreme Court on this issue are strictly complied with,” said the statement. Senior officers have, however, asked the officer to clarify his position on the tweet.

“It was a momentary inadvertant slip on my part. It does not reflect any opinion/view. I sincerely apologise for the inadvertant slip,” Arya later tweeted from his handle on Friday night.

Arya, a 2008 batch IPS officer, was earlier posted with the PCR unit and was given the charge of the re-constituted southwest district.
