At a research done by Johns Hopkins University, the bacteria in your mouth that cause chronic gum infections may also be the trigger for the autoimmune inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

In the journal Science Translational Medicine, the investigators have identified the common denominator in gum disease and in many people with RA to be Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. This is the only bacteria to induce hypercitrullination in neutrophils, a white blood cell and part of the immune system. Researchers say Neutrophils are the most abundant inflammatory cells found in both the joints of patients with RA and the gums of periodontal disease sufferers.
