Lucknow: Days after the central government issued an ordinance criminalizing triple talaq, a man working in Saudi Arabia gave triple talaq to his wife in Bahraich district over phone.

A case has been registered against the husband.

The wife’s mother, Reshma, alleged that her daughter was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry and it was because of this that her daughter had been given divorce on phone. “My daughter was being mistreated by her in-laws. I brought her to my home and they started demanding money and threatened to give divorce which finally happened,” she stated. The victim, Noori said, “I have been married for eight months. My mother-in-law beats me and was demanding a motorcycle and fifty thousand rupees.” The police have registered a case under relevant sections.

“The complainant Noorie’s husband lives in Saudi Arabia. We have got  a complaint that he has given  her ‘talaq’ on phone . We have registered a case under the provisions of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act and other relevant sections of the IPC,” said a senior police official.

“The case is under investigation and necessary action will be taken soon,” said a senior police official, he added.

This, incidentally, is the first case of triple talaq after the ordinance was issued.
