Young, promising and raring to go — these words aptly describe 21-year-old beatboxer and rapper Riyaz, who started off rapping ‘just for kicks’ as he fondly puts it. He is emerging as one of the eminent names in the beat-boxing scene in the country. The three-time record holder has been on a roll, and is prepping for his debut album release. In a candid chat, he tells us more...

“I’m currently working on the video aspect of the album. I’m done with the audio. This is my first album and it’s completely hip-hop in terms of its genre. I have made the tracks on the reality of what’s happening in India and youth, I have also spoken against drugs in the song. Trying to send a good message that lifts, supports and also sends cartloads of good vibes to my folks from the music community,” he says.

Riyaz, who goes by the stage name Rimen, also made it to India Books of Records and World Records of India. Prod him about his fondest memories on stage, and he says, “I think performing with Sunidhi Chauhan and Shankar Mahadevan sir has got to be the best memories in my career.”

While he currently judges music shows in universities across the country; Riyaz recollects how there has been no escape from haters. “So, the other day, someone just told me that hip-hop is not even a form of music. I think I’ve developed the right approach to deal with destructive and inane comments. As much as I know that they are doing this for attention, I think ignoring all of this and focusing on the positives is what works in my favour.”

Riyaz, who also has a crew titled BEATSQUADS that he frequently tours and performs with, believes the only way forward is through team work and more collaboratons. “I happened to come across a bunch of uber-talented guys while judging a show at a college. So, I decided to bring them on board, support and collaborate with them. All of us perform regularly and it’s been a great journey so far.”

Riyaz started up with rap and released his debut track war se. But, he believes that his forthcoming debut album will be the game-changer.

“Hip-hop is not yet mainstream in India. It’s still in its underground stages. But, I hope more people take to the genre better after this album releases.”

Riyaz, who’s an avid movie buff, loves spending his freetime surfing the net and streaming movies. “I love watching movies and spending the entire day streaming stuff!” quips the BBA graduate, who also holds a record for beatboxing continuously for ten hours.
