Mobile chip leader Qualcomm has announced that it  has achieved the world’s first 5G data connection and launched the first 5G chipset — the X50.

Qualcomm’s 5G technology is aimed at the IoT ecosystem that requ-ires multiple devices, performing multiple op-erations to be connected seamlessly to the mobile device, at the same time.  The 5G reference will provide the backbone for business-related app-lications and  is expected to  enhance  the mob-ile broadband experien-ce for consumers around the world.

The new 5G technology is based on ‘millimeter wave’  technology, which offers better reliability, reduced  latency (that is the gap between dialing a call and getting the connection) and enhanc-ed user data speeds.

“I expect India to be one of the earliest countries to adopt 5G,” says Jim Cathey, senior vice- president and president, Asia Pacific and India, Qualcomm.

If as expected,  the current generation of handset will  be made obsolete by new 5G devices, will  customers here  pay the price of change?  “When 4G happened, pe-ople changed their handsets, only after they we-re convinced about how it will make their life ea-sier. Similarly, the potential of 5G with say, conn-ected homes, smart cit-ies and VR applications, people will ask for 5G de-vices and the handset pr-ices will not bother th-em too much,” he adds.
