Man dies of heart attack after brawl

Kolkata

Aug. 13: A 68-year-old heart patient, Swapan Dey, died of a massive attack after being humiliated by one of his neighbours at Belgachia.

The altercation started over a cricket ball. On Tuesday, the victim's 20-year-old son, a BCA student and resident of 27/5 J.K. Mitra Road, was playing cricket with his friends when the ball accidentally bounced into one of their neighbour's house.

Angered by this, the neighbour not only abused the boy but also humiliated his father when he tried to intervene. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been initiated against the accused. He has been detained.

On asking for the ball, neighbour Kali Pada Haldar scolded the boys for being careless and decided to keep the ball for the next 24 hours in order to teach them a lesson.

On Wednesday morning, when the boys went to his house for the ball, they were abused. When Mr Dey heard Mr Haldar using abusive language he tried to intervene, but was himself abused and assaulted. It lasted for over 15 minutes after which Mr Dey started feeling uneasy.

"Just after his fight with Mr Haldar, he started feeling uneasy," recalled his wife Mitali Dey. By the time, he could be taken to the R.G. Kar Hospital, he succumbed. Dey, who owned a business and was very popular in the locality, has left behind two children and his wife.
