2nd, 3rd yr varsity results out

Aug. 13: Calcutta Univ-ersity announced the results of B.A, B.Sc and B.Com (general) Part III examinations under the 1+1+1 old system and the Part II examinations under the 2+1 system on Wednesday.

This year, the pass percentage in Part III examinations is 90.7 in B.A (a rise by 1.4 per cent), 95.7 in B.Sc (a rise by 0.5 per cent) and 93.6 in B.Com (a rise by 2.6 per cent). The pass percentage in Part II is 84.9, 87.9, and 91.2 in B.A, B.Sc and B.Com respectively. In 2008, 18,112 candidates appeared in B.A, 2,562 in B.Sc and 5,716 for B.Com. examination.

"This is the first year under the varsity regulations where students appeared under the 1+1+1 system," deputy controller of examination Debashish Biswas said.

Parties agree on peace in Nandigram

Aug. 13: Perhaps at last realising the futility of continued violence, all political parties on Wednesday agreed to help the police recover illegal arms and arrest criminals who were not allowing peace to be restored at Nandigram.

The meeting held at the BDO office was attended by representatives of all political parties, including the CPI(M) and the Trina-mul Congress. East Medinipur district magistrate Anup Agarwal, superintendent of police S.S. Panda and OC Nandigram Debashis Chakraborty.

The political parties accepted their proposal to suspend political meetings and rallies for 15 days. Meanwhile, the police recovered bombs and firearms near Nandigram.
